In recent years,many scholars began to turn their attention to the design of characters in TCFL textbooks.Chinese as a foreign language teaching materials,especially junior high school Chinese teaching materials,mostly display the content of the text in the way of character dialogue.The character design in the teaching materials is not only related to the spread of Chinese culture,cross-cultural communication,but also related to the shaping of the overall national image.This paper mainly uses the methods of literature and data statistics to investigate the design of characters in four sets of TCFL textbooks.It analyzes the basic information design of each set of textbooks from three aspects: the name of characters,the gender,age and nationality distribution,and the identity setting of characters,and then compares the advantages and disadvantages of the four sets of textbooks in the design of background information of characters.On the basis of textual analysis,this paper makes an in-depth analysis and comparison of the overall external image,internal character and interpersonal relationship of the main characters in each textbook,and compares them with the excellent English textbooks written abroad,so as to draw the essence and advantages of each other while maintaining their own strengths.Four sets of Chinese teaching materials in the character design,there are both worthy of reference,but also need to improve.In the further consideration of the design of characters in TCFL teaching materials,it is proposed that Chinese teaching materials should convey real and natural images of Chinese people,rich and interesting Chinese culture,friendly and appropriate cross-cultural exchanges.The character design of teaching materials should be targeted,practical,interesting,comprehensive and typical,contemporary and inherited.
