Report On The Translation Of Excerpts From The Forbidden City I Knew

The writing of the report is based on the author’s task of translating the excerpts from The Forbidden City I Knew written by Li Wenru,the former deputy curator of the Palace Museum in Beijing.Through this task,the author has enriched her practical experience in translation and realized that language learning is an endless process.In this report,the source text and the writer,the translation process,the functional equivalence theory,and problems in translation are introduced in five parts.The first part briefly introduces the translation task including the background and time limitation;the background of the writer and his other literary works;the content and features of the source text.The second part is about the process of the translation,including preparation before translation,translating,and the work of proofreading.The third part introduces in detail the development of functional equivalence theory,the translation principles proposed by Nida.The fourth part discusses the application of functional equivalence theory in translation practice through example analysis.In lexical level,the author had referred to commonly used expressions,parallel texts on translating proper nouns and Chinese idioms.In syntactic level,strategies of sentence translation are illustrated.Translator can divide long sentences into short sentences or merge clauses into long sentences according to the logical relations.In textual level,application of functional equivalence in text translation is discussed by analyzing the translation of Chinese ancient prose and descriptive text.The fifth part is a conclusion of the significance of translation practice and the shortcomings of the report.The author hopes that this report can offer a reference for other translators in translation.
