A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Ascent Of Humanity (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Venuti’s Deconstructive Translation Theory

Based on the author’s translation experience,this report takes Charles’ book The Ascent of Humanity as the translation material and is guided by Venuti’s foreignization theory.The translation material is an argumentative prose,more inclined to argumentation.This kind of article is mainly to publish the discussion,with vivid images as well as strict logic;it should not only move others by emotion,but also convince others by reason.Therefore,special attention should be paid to translation.The report consists of five chapters.The first chapter is a general description of the translation task,including the provenance and type of source text,as well as the selection of translation theory,besides,it briefly explains the theoretical and practical significance of the report.The second chapter is a detailed description of this translation task,the first part being the preparation of translation:investigation about the author Charles’ background information and relevant understanding of the style of the original text;the second part is the translation and modification,stressing the significance of modification through several simple examples;the third part is the building of Translation Memory Exchange.Chapter three focuses on Venuti’s theory of foreignization.Because foreignization translation is the core and distribution point of all his thoughts,the author first elaborates on foreignization translation.Then it talks resistant translation and its concerning parts:abusive fidelity as well as symptomatic reading.Chapter four goes closely with chapter three,which is the practical translation under the guidance of Venuti’s translation theory.Through specific and abundant instances,it analyzes the application of foreignization and resistant translation,including faithful to the author’s intention,preservation of original text culture,lexical and syntactical level.Finally,the fifth chapter is the conclusion of this report.According to the translation practice and Venuti’s theory of foreignization,the translator finally makes two findings.The first one is that the function of guidance from theory to practice counts more than that from practice to theory.Second,the translation of argumentative prose should focus on argumentation or prose in translation,which one is preferred up to the style of the original text style.In view of these two points,the translator also carried on simple elaboration.
