The translatability and untranslatability of language are important issues of translation studies,in which the untranslatability is mainly reflected in the untranslatability of language and culture.Translation is a cross-cultural activity, solving the problem of untranslatability in both language and culture is helpful to achieve efficient communication between different cultures, and translation compensation undoubtedly provides a way to overcome such untranslatability.Football:The Philosophy Behind the Game is a fascinating book that combines football game with philosophical elements, with abundant examples illustrating their close relationship. The book is packed with philosophy and football related terms that require a certain degree of background information from target readers. The loss in both language and culture prompts me to adopt Ma Hongjun's categorization of compensation as well as other scholars' opinions on concrete strategies.According to Ma,there are two types of compensation,i.e.implicit compensation and explicit compensation, and to be more specifically, amplification, paraphrase, specification, generalization, substitution and others can be classified as implicit strategies while annotation(annotation within text and annotation outside text)fall into the category of explicit ones. This thesis aims to analyze a number of different cases where these strategies apply to overcome untranslatability.
