In the early studies of translation theories, the role of translator has long been neglected. It is since the "cultural turn" in 1970s that the focus of the translation studies has shifted from linguistics studies to culture studies and it is at that time scholars began to pay more attention to the role of translators. This thesis carries out a detailed qualitative analysis on translator's subjectivity exemplified in translating satirical metaphors in Fortress Besieged translated by Jeanne Kelly and Nathan K.Mao from the perspective of George Steiner's fourfold hermeneutic motion theory. This study finds out that translator's subjectivity is manifested in Kelly and Mao's selection of the original text, their interpretation of the author's intent when translating metaphoric objects, their evaluation of different translation strategies and their compensation for all the deficiencies in the previous steps. In the step of initial trust,Kelly and Mao appreciated Fortress Besieged and believed the satirical metaphors in this novel can be translated. In the step of aggression,Kelly and Mao interpreted the satirical metaphors based on their past knowledge, experience and the researches they did.In the step of incorporation,Kelly and Mao balanced the use of foreignization and domestication in translating satirical metaphors and were meticulous about whether to retain or replace the metaphoric objects.Through foreignization, they injected fresh expressions into the target language and through domestication.they made their translation easier for target text readers to get across. In the final step of compensation,Kelly and Mao compensated the losses, redundancy and other deficiencies caused in the previous three steps through supplement and adding notes.Through this study, the author gained a profound understanding of how translator's subjectivity is manifested in the satirical metaphor translation in Fortress Besieged and hopes this thesis can provide some references to the study of satirical metaphor translation in Fortress Besieged and further the research on translator's subjectivity.
