The junior high school stage is an important period for cultivating students’ English interest and laying the foundation for students’ English learning.How to use activities to enhance students’ classroom participation is a problem for every junior high school English teacher.As a main classroom activity,role-play activities can lead students to a variety of situations and use English flexibly.A large number of studies have shown that role-play activities are different from traditional question-and-answer activities.Role-play activities are diverse and relatively easy to use flexibly.However,due to the tight schedule and heavy tasks in junior high school,role-play activities are difficult to use in the classroom.In order to explore the role of role-play activities in stimulating junior high school students’ participation in classroom activities.The author designed questionnaires for students,interviews for teachers and students,and combined with case study analysis to answer the following three research questions:1.What is the status quo of teachers’ using of role-play activities?2.What is the effect of role-play activities on students’ participation in English classroom?3.What factors in role-play activities affect student participation?After data analysis,the authors found that the use of role-play activities is relatively common.However,teachers also have many problems when applying role-play activities,such as theme design,difficulty control,etc.Although role-play activities will greatly affect students’ participation,the students’ classroom participation is not ideal.Besides,the form of role-play,role-play’s theme setting and role-play’s situational will greatly affect students’ participation in the activities.Therefore,the author suggests that teachers need to consider the specificity of junior high school students,and appropriately use role-play activities.
