With the largest number of mobile internet citizens in the world,China boasts a rich market where an increasing number of mobile applications(Hereinafter referred to as App)is developing and tremendous amount of Chinese users are living,which has been not only an important symbol of the changing internet era from PC side to mobile side,but also a direct way to change the lifestyle,working mode and entertainment for hundreds of millions of Chinese people.However,the fact that few of the endless stream of apps has clear and clever English translation names has become a contraint for foreign users and cross-cultural communication in the field of internet technology industry,as well as a stumbling block for the Chinese internet companies to develop abroad.Therefore,theoretical and practical research on this topic will help the increasingly prosperous Chinese apps to stand on the world stage.It is not only an internal affair in the science and technology field,but also the responsibility of each translator and translation researcherBased on this background,this thesis conducts the English translation research for the names of Chinese apps under the joint guidance of the existing translation principles for advertising brand names and the famous internet thinkings.Further,this thesis presents a systematic good-translation view and methodology for different kinds of Chinese app names to achieve good translatons which adapt to the development stage of contemporary Chinese apps under the influence of their brand connotations,product traits as well as the psychological foundation of the internet users.All above is to make contribution to the theoretical construction and the research development of this field.As a comprehensive translation research thesis,this thesis mainly focuses on qualitative research methods on the study of English translation for Chinese app names supplemented by quantitative research methods.Also,a variety of research methods such as interpretation method,graphic method,literature method,case study method,comparative mehod,interdisciplinary method and data analysis method are compresensively and flexibly used to refine this thesis from multiple perspectives.This thesis is divided into six chapters.The first three chapters are the adaptation of the needs of the times,the guiding roots and the English translation cases,which together constitute the research basis of this thesis.The first chapter Introduction guides the full text,mainly offering the research background,the purposes,the significance,the innovation,the methods,the process and other basic issues of the research to give a general introduction for this thesis.Besides,the literature riview are also included in this chapter.The second chapter Ideological Basis expounds the principles or thinkings that guide the thesis from the inner and outer of translation field briefly.Separately,the basis of inner translation refers to the existing research on the translation of advertising brand names,and the basis of external translation refers to the famous internet thinkings.Further,the theoretical convergence and complementarity of the two in terms of content and methods are also explored and discussed.The third chapter Case Analysis selects some representative English article segments to evaluate or compare the good and bad points of the English translation for the Chinese app names included.In addition,the difficulties in translating Chinese app names have gradually surfaced from this chapterThe last three chapters charify the practicality of the thesis from the English translation view,methodology and research perspective,jointly promoting the extension of this thesis from theory to practice.The fourth chapter English Translation View puts forward the good translation view that the pronunciation and meaning are blended harmoniously based on the first three chapters.Then some of the English translation of Chinese app names mentioned above are optimized to a certain extent according to the good translation view,This chapter also explains the essential elements of making a good translation and the principles should be followed by the translators.The fifth chapter Methodology successively elaborates the English translation strategies for the names of Chinese apps from three levels on the foundation the previous chapters to apply the argument to the most apps without good translation names.At first,Giving English translation methods for different kinds of Chinese App names.Secondly,Listing and sorting out some treatments for the specific problems and difficulties.Lastly,Suggesting the basic qualities that the translators of Chinese app names shoud have.The sixth chapter is the summary chapter which review the full thesis as well as proposes its possible application prospects and predictable operational limitations.It is also the concise sublimation chapter of the whole thesis.Throughout the whole thesis,the first three chapters and the other three chapters are closed linked,integrated into each other,interpreted by each other and each part has its own emphasis point at the same time.The first three chapters focus on "Ying",responding to the needs of the times and comforming to the internal and external guidance of this thesis.It is the basis for the formation of English translation view and methodology in the last three chapters.The last three chapters underline "Yong",in which the application of the English translation view and the abilities of translators are both emphasized.It is the in-depth development of the background discussion and case analysis of the first three chapters.That is,the two parts are connected to each other,complianting the Chinese meaning of the word"App" respectively.The two parts are combined to form the study skeleton of this thesisAmong the six chapters,the third chapter,the fourth chapter and the fifth chapter constitute the main body of the thesis,interacting with each other and moving forward chapter by chapter.That is,deriving the target theoretical view of English translation from the case analysis and then expanding from the view leve to practical level.It is not ony an organic whole of "Instance-Concept-Method" but also a complete closed loop from practice to speculation and then return to practice The elaboration to translation examples determines the achievement of English translation view,which affects the choice of English translation methods.Also,the specific translation methods can counteract the translation example and optimize its translation strategies of Chinese app names.Apprently,it is a process of mutual achievement which together constitute the flesh and blood of this thesis.It is worth mentioning that the appendix at the end of this thesis lists the suggested English translation names for 100 Chinese mainstream apps in the order of the 2018 China Mobile App Ranking released by Analysys under the influence of the English translation view and the methodology proposed in this thesis.Both the apps with official English names and the apps with trial translation are showed together on the list with the purpose of making a supplement for the main part of this thesis and providing more translation examples and details for making deeper studies on the topic in the future.
