Cao Wenxuan is one of the most important writers in the contemporary Chinese literary world.He has been engaged in literary creation for decades and has created a large number of excellent works.Image writing is a major feature of Cao Wenxuan’s literary creation.He selects and constructs a series of rich images in his works.These images reflect the writer’s thinking on life and human nature,and show Cao Wenxuan’s unique aesthetic pursuit and artistic interest,which can be a key for us to interpret Cao Wenxuan’s literary world.Based on Mr.Yang Yi’s definition of "image" in "Chinese narratology",this paper takes the "image" in Cao Wenxuan’s novels as the starting point,analyzes the symbolic meaning,narrative function,spiritual direction and generating reasons of the image in Cao Wenxuan’s novels,so as to grasp the creative characteristics of Cao Wenxuan’s novels.This paper is divided into the following parts:The first chapter,the introduction part,combs the overall research status of Cao Wenxuan’s novels,summarizes the current situation of image research,defines the concept of "image",discusses the academic research space of Cao Wenxuan’s novel image research which has not been expanded in the current academic circles,and then clarifies the purpose and significance of this topic.The second chapter discusses the symbolic meaning of the images in Cao Wenxuan’s novels,from the aspects of suffering and growth,desire and temptation,warmth and love,home feelings and spiritual residence,art harmony and human nature harmony,to grasp the symbolic connotation of the representative images in his novels.The third chapter,from the perspective of image narrative function,discusses the narrative function of Cao Wenxuan’s novel image in responding to the characters’ emotion,constructing the blank art,and creating the artistic conception of poetry and painting.The fourth chapter analyzes the spiritual direction of image writing in Cao Wenxuan’s novels,including the description of local ideal home,the adherence to the pure and beautiful human nature,and the reflection on the spiritual world of modern people.The fifth chapter analyzes the reasons for the formation of the image in Cao Wenxuan’s novels,and explains the reasons from four aspects: the influence of the northern Jiangsu plainstyle,the projection of childhood life experience,the aesthetic pursuit of classicism,and the self-identity of children’s writers.
