Education has always been one of main priorities of China.Educational reform and innovation require continuous communication among countries.At present,even though increasing excellent translated works on education are introduced into China,there are few opportunities for the rest of world to get access to the educational achievements of China.In consequence,a stereotype of "Chinese school education" has formed,which to some extent misleads western countries.It is of great necessity for Chinese education theory to be disseminated abroad.In this context,The Transition from a Knowledgeable Teacher to a Wise Teacher,the Chapter Seven of The Process from Effective Teaching to Excellent Teaching was translated.Numerous teaching cases are listed in the text to better expound the latest educational achievements of Yu Wensen,including ancient maxims and poetries.Therefore,the source text should be categorized into social science,however,with many expressions featuring in literary grace.Given the complexity of the source text,Relevance Theory is applicable for providing a unique perspective.Several crucial concepts of Relevance Theory are explicated in this report including "optimal relevance","cognitive context","informative intention and communicative intention" and "direct translation and indirect translation".Translation cases are studied at the level of word,sentence and culture to discuss what specific methods and strategies should be used from the perspective of Relevance Theory.The translation of educational terms and four-character idioms are involved in the study of lexical cases.Searching in the corpus and direct translation are applied in translating "standardized terms"and "non-standardized terms" to ensure the accuracy while indirect translation is mainly for retaining the concision and vividness of four-character idioms through proper strategies to deal with allusion and metaphor.The sentence level involves the cohesion contrast and translation in terms of parataxis and hypotaxis.Long and complexed sentences featuring in four-character idioms are another important aspect in translation at this level.At the level of culture,the cultural default is studied to which the strategies of footnotes and explanations are applied.As for the balance between the form and meaning of couplets and poetries which is regarded as the main difficulty in this report,the combination of direct and indirect translation serves as the effective method.This report aims to provide reference for the translation of social science texts from the perspective of Relevance Theory.
