As one of the three major pictorials of New China,Nationality Pictorial is the first official pictorial in the world created by the government for ethnic minorities.Since it was founded in 1955,it has made a graphic depiction of major events and cultures of ethnic minorities,providing historical testimony for the visual changes of the nation-state since the New China.The cover is a mirror that reads the publication.The cover of more than 600 issues of Nationality Pictorial visually interpreted the socialist construction of the ethnic minorities in New China and the collective imagination of the people,and constructed three types of visual images of ethnic minorities,including socialist builders,ethnic policy advocates,and ethnic cultural spokespersons.,And from the evolution of the visual image of "worker,peasant and labor model" to "ethnic elite","response to call" to "active maintenance","focus on inheritance" to "toward integration",explore the historical development of the visual image of ethnic minorities in New China Richness and diversity.The silhouettes of minority life in various periods are the main body of the image on the cover of Nationality Pictorial.Most of them use the physical representations of speech value and sense of time in each period to construct the idealized image meaning of "minority" throughsummoning,embezzlement and group imagination.This kind of construction is not a direct "mirror" mapping,but a multi-dimensional common stipulation such as the media positioning of "publicizing national ethnic work",the system norms of "unified multi-ethnic country" and the image concept of "focusing on minority memory" It is the knowledge production about the visual image of ethnic minorities completed under the implicit "participation" of "visualization" and "metaphor" visual strategies.Power permeates the production of media discourse and affects the standards of media discourse.The national discourse system of the Government Illustrated and the socialist realism photography concept regulate the stability of the core of minority visual images.Under the ambiguous collusion of social power,Nationality Pictorial has solidified the dual national imagination and collective memory of the "culturally diverse and politically integrated".This imaginative meaning derived from collective memory means that practice is the interaction between the media and the history of social structural change.Through the construction of the visual images and cultural codes of ethnic minorities,the symbolic meaning of the cover of the Nationality Pictorial has been demonstrated to symbolize since the beginning of New China Various concepts about "minorities".
