| This research starts from the perspective of conceptual metaphor research.Based on a cognitive interpretation of the use of conceptual metaphors in the English novel The Bluest Eye,the thesis makes a comparative analysis of its two Chinese translations by Chen Sudong and Yang Xiangrong respectively. It compares the translation strategies of conceptual metaphors and the cognitive psychology behind them from a cognitive perspective and thus interprets their translation psychology and cognitive context construction process respectively.Although there are many studies on the translation of foreign literary works and conceptual metaphors, the translation strategies of conceptual metaphors in foreign literary works and the cognitive psychology behind them are still insufficient, and further research is needed, which is the main objective of this study. This thesis first expounds the essence of metaphor translation from the cognitive perspective as well as the cognitive similarity between metaphor and translation construction to build the foundation for exploring the cognitive psychology of metaphor translation.Furthermore, the thesis conducts a cognitive analysis of the reading psychology of conceptual metaphor in literary works and of the psychology of translation strategies of conceptual metaphors in literary works, which is not only helpful to translation practice in terms of conceptual metaphor translation in literary works but also contributes to theoretical studies by revealing the cognitive psychological characteristics of metaphor translation. This research finds that due to the translator’s deep understanding of the original text and the common physical experience of human beings, the translator and the original author’s cognitive methods are similar in most cases,so the translator can directly transplant the metaphors in the original text and thereby keep the original language style as much as possible. Most of the conceptual metaphors of The Bluest Eye can be transplanted into the target language.Because of the influence of factors other than language, such as the differences between Chinese and foreign cultures, the conceptual metaphors in The Bluest Eye sometimes cannot be transplanted into the target language.Based on this problem, this article analyzes the two Chinese versions of the novel and finally summarizes three different translation strategies in that case, namely replacing metaphors, manifesting metaphors, and reshaping metaphors. With these strategies, the translation can better express the meaning of the original text and reduce readers’ misunderstanding. On the basis of the above cognitive traits and translations strategies, and combining the context of the original text, this thesis analyzes which form is more in line with the original text, and selects translations that are more in line with the original context,so as to interpret the constructive psychology of cognitive context in translation. This study can provide a cognitive reference for better interpretation of conceptual metaphors in literary works in the future and provide a new way of re-conceptualization of translation strategies of conceptual metaphors. |
