The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 Edition)puts forward that "English curriculum undertakes the task of developing students’ thinking ability".In 2014,the Ministry of Education launched a new round of curriculum reform,emphasizing the goal of cultivating the core quality of subjects,it is an urgent need to adapt to the world educational reform and development trend and enhance the international competitiveness of China’s education.According to the English Curriculum Standards for Ordinary Senior High Schools(2017 edition),thinking quality is one of the four core qualities of English Subject.The cultivation of thinking quality refers to the cultivation of thinking ability and level in the aspects of logical,critical,creative thinking.English reading plays an important part in English teaching,and the teaching of it based on core accomplishment proves to be the main position of cultivating students’ thinking quality.More importantly,the improvement of thinking quality is also very conducive to the other three core qualities of the cultivation of language ability,cross-cultural awareness and learning ability.Based on Bloom’s education target classification theory and the critical reading theory,with the cultivation of the core quality of English subject as the educational goal,this thesis takes teachers and students in Fuping Experimental Middle School as the research object and carries out the design and implementation of English reading teaching aiming at the cultivation of thinking quality,to explore influence of the teaching on development of both students’ thinking quality and their reading ability.This thesis focuses on the following three issues: 1)How do we design English reading teaching to cultivate students’ thinking quality? 2)How does English reading teaching aiming at the cultivation of thinking quality affect students’ thinking quality?3)How does English reading teaching aiming at the cultivation of thinking quality affect students’ English reading comprehension performance and ability?This thesis applies inlaid graphics test method to understand the students’ cognitive style,the interview method to analyze current teaching of thinking quality and effectafter the research,makes a control experiment with two classes in the same reading level as objects.The experimental class uses English reading teaching aiming at the cultivation of thinking quality,by designing elaborately reading teaching activities of thinking quality cultivation,to train and develop students’ four aspects of cognitive ability of observation and comparison,analysis and inference,inductive and construction and criticism and innovation in a conscious,planned and focused way,trying to enhance their logic,critical thinking and creativity.The control class adopts the traditional input-oriented teaching method which centers on language knowledge and reading skills.After a semester’s teaching practice,the results show that compared with the control class,the average score of students in the experimental class is significantly improved,while the average score of students in the control class is slightly improved.It can be seen that the implementation of English reading teaching aiming at the cultivation of thinking quality can have a positive impact on students’ English reading level and help to improve their English reading performance.In addition,the author used the critical thinking ability scale to measure the students’ critical thinking quality before and after the experiment,and the results showed that the quality level of critical thinking in the post-test class was higher than that in the control class,which also indicated that this teaching method could promote the improvement of thinking quality level in reading practice to some extent.There are also some limitations in this study,which need to be further studied in the future,especially about the essential relationship between reading ability and thinking quality level.
