| It has been more than half a century since the new concept English series was first published.Due to the limitations of the times, the textbook itself inevitably has some obvious defects, such as: the content of the text and related sentence patterns are old, lack of moral elements, lack of classical corpus and so on.However, these defects do not affect the classical status of the textbook in the eyes of English teachers and English learners.Nowadays, with a variety of new English textbooks coming into being endlessly,New Concept English can still maintain a high market share, and it will continue to do so year by year.In order to analyze and reveal the true mystery of this set of classic and successful textbooks, namely, the real compilation concept of New Concept English and the inherent characteristics of this textbook, the author carried out a systematic and in-depth study on this by using the methods of literature research, comparative analysis and case analysis. This paper consists of the following parts: the introduction part mainly describes the research origin, research significance, main research methods, the definition of related concepts and research review. In Chapter 1,the author finds out the real compiling concept of the New Concept English--"Situationalized Structural Grading" curriculum concept through the excavation, collation and analysis of a large number of research literature at home and abroad. This concept was initiated by Harold Palmer,a famous English foreign language educator in the 20 th century. It shows a distinct systematicness and scientificity, which is in sharp contrast with the prevailing "grammar-translation" foreign language education concept in the education field at that time. The concept of "Situationalized Structural Grading" curriculum concept is exactly the accurate connotation of the word "new concept" in New Concept English. In Chapter 1,the author analyzes the concrete representation of the "Situationalized Structural Grading" concept and its important curriculum value in detail. The important conclusion drawn in this chapter is the key to the smooth progress of this study, which is a link between the preceding and the following in the whole study. The second chapter focuses on the analysis of the unique characteristics of the New Concept English under the new concept. The author makes a detailed interpretation of the characteristics of the New Concept English textbook based on the "Situationalized Structural Grading" curriculum concept from six aspects: the instruction of the textbook, the presentation form of the text, sentence pattern and grammar, abstract writing, exercise and test, unconventional corpus, etc.Although New Concept English has many unique advantages that many foreign language textbooks do not have,it also inevitably has some obvious defects due to the limitations of the times, which are also of great significance to the development of contemporary foreign language textbooks. Therefore,in the third chapter, the author makes a brief analysis of the shortcomings of the textbook. In chapter four, based on the current situation and problems of foreign language teaching materials in China, the author makes a summary of the implications of the compilation concept and characteristics of New Concept English for the development of foreign language teaching materials.Although the concept of "Situationalized Structural Grading" has been put forward for more than a century, the ideas of using both "spontaneous capacities" and "studial capacities",taking sentences as the basic teaching unit, segmenting the knowledge according to the difficulty and practicability, and following the concrete situational teaching principles still have a profound pedagogical and linguistic value today. The New Concept English series developed by L.G.Alexander on the basis of the concept of "Situationalized Structural Grading" has finally become a everlasting classic foreignlanguage textbooks which can be regarded as the best and model in foreign language textbooks. The secret behind the success of New Concept English has some practical enlightenment on how to develop more scientific and practical foreign language textbooks and how to use them more effectively. |
