A Translation Report For Brotopia:Breaking Up The Boys’ Club Of Silicon Valley(Chapters 7 And 8)

This is a translation project report for Brotopia: Breaking Up the Boys’ Club of Silicon Valley(Chapters 7 and 8)by Emily Chang.Published in February 2018,it has no Chinese version according to the translator’s investigation.The book,attracting great attention in the society,takes Silicon Valley as an example to reveal the true position of women in tech industry,which is highly praised by the New York Times and Financial Times and other journals.The chapters 7 and 8 are the Source Text of this project.Between them,the former one talks about the hot issue of work-family balance,and the latter one discusses that tech companies are responsible for online violence whose target is mainly women.There are systematic differences in the use of pronouns between Chinese and English.Pronouns are used frequently in English,especially demonstrative pronouns.In the Source Text,there is one pronoun used three times in a sentence.However,they are seldom-used in Chinese avoiding causing confusion.This difference acts as one of the difficulties in the translation.Besides,the Source Text contains two chapters which include 5 and 7 sections respectively,and every section has its own title.When they are directly translated,the Chinese version will distort their original meaning,which leads to misunderstanding among readers.Thus,it’s difficult to translate these subtitles.With the help of the explicitation universal discussed by Mona Baker,the translator tries to solve above problems.Professor Baker proposed six universal features of translation,one of which is explicitation.It is an overall tendency of translators to spell things out rather than leaving them implicit.Under the guidance of this theory,the translator does not directly translate pronouns into 它,这 and 那 and so on.Rather,most pronouns are made explicit into what they refer to,which is a good way to improve readability of the Target Text.Moreover,explicitation guides the translator to translate these subtitles.Some subtitles cannot express the meaning of the original text when they are directly translated.In this circumstance,the translator makes the implicit information of subtitles explicit depending on the context.And when the Chinesemeaning of abstract words or phrases in subtitles will cause ambiguity,they are translated into the concrete things that they point to,which is easier for readers to understand.
