A Study On Hainan Wei In Ming Dynasty

The Garrison system was a basic military system of the Ming Dynasty.The purpose of setting up Hainan Wei in Ming Dynasty was to protect the safety of Hainan and reduce the harassment of Japanese pirates.Due to the unique regional characteristics of Hainan,the establishment of Hainan Wei has the characteristics of focusing on the Hongwu Period,internal and external joint defense in space,and the emphasis of troops deployment changes from inland to coastal areas.After the establishment of Hainan Wei,central and local governments are constantly improving their defense capabilities by purchasing and manufacturing ships and armaments,and build a city system centered on "Wei" and "Suo".Hainan Wei plays an important role in maritime patrol,suppressing the rebellion of Li Nationality and exterminating bandits.Hainan Wei even sent troops to Guangdong and Guangxi to help the local government guard the area.This shows that the strategic position of Hainan in the Ming Dynasty can be demonstrated,thus enhancing the status of Hainan in the country,and shows that the Ming Dynasty has the goal of becoming a maritime power.However,because of domestic troubles,central government gave up the dream of being a maritime power and carried out the policy of seclusion in the middle and late Ming Dynasty.Therefore,the function of Hainan Wei didn’t break through the category of Defense.In the end,Hainan Wei did not really go to the depths of the South China Sea,or even to a wider ocean.Hainan Wei has a profound influence on Hainan’s history and culture,it accelerated the development of land resources and the improvement of agricultural productivity,promoted the formation of Jun dialects,and enriched the dialect culture of Hainan.At the same time,it also promoted the development of education in Hainan.
