As a tool of communication,English has been attracted more and more attention.The New English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2017-year edition)further clarifies the importance of spoken English communicative competence and points out that junior middle school is a very important stage in developing students’ spoken English.Speaking is one of the four basic skills of English learning and an important goal of English teaching.For a long time,due to the impact of exam-oriented education,the situation of spoken English teaching in junior middle school is not optimistic.Educators should consider deeply the issue of how to effectively improve junior middle school spoken English teaching according to the requirements of the New English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2017)under the current educational system.Therefore,in order to know the present situation of spoken English teaching in junior middle school,104 ninth graders and 4 teachers are selected as the subjects in C Middle School in L City,and questionnaires,interviews and classroom observation are taken to explore the present situation and the existing problems and reasons of junior middle school spoken English teaching.Then the corresponding countermeasures for these problems are proposed,so as to provide certain help and reference for junior middle school spoken English teaching.There are two main research questions in the thesis:1.What is the attitude of teachers and students towards junior middle school spoken English teaching?2.What are the problems in junior middle school spoken English teaching?The results show that most junior middle school students and teachers can recognize the importance of spoken English.Many students consciously train their spoken English.Some teachers also adopt a new teaching method to increase the time for students to speak English in class to improve their speaking ability.But there are still some students and teachers who can’t catch the importance of spoken English as well.Atthe same time,there are many problems in junior middle school spoken English teaching.Teachers need to improve their professional level and master efficient teaching methods.Meanwhile,students’ basic knowledge of language is insufficient Some students may have psychological barriers when speaking English,and they do not want to actively participate in spoken activities.In addition,the lack of real language environment,the single evaluation mode of spoken English,and the lack of basic teaching facilities are all factors that affect junior middle school spoken English teaching.Based on the above research results,the thesis puts forward some suggestions to improve junior middle school spoken English teaching,such as improving the comprehensive quality of teachers,adopting reasonable teaching methods,selecting appropriate teaching materials,cultivating students’ good habits of learning spoken English,enhancing students’ self-confidence,integrating spoken English test into the existing examination system and increasing investment in basic teaching facilities and so on.Then the current situation of spoken English teaching in junior middle school can be improved.
