| With the increase of the importance of oral frequency of English in communication, more emphasis is put on student’s oral production in various teaching such as English reading in senior middle school. The present study,by adopting classroom observation and interview, investigated the student’s oral production in senior high school English reading class in the aspects of time length,turn-taking,accuracy,fluency and complexity aiming to reveal its current situation to offer references for teaching and learning reform. This study took 6 teachers and students in their class from Yantai No.1 Middle School as the participants, and used two methods of classroom observations and interviews in order to solve the following problems: 1)What is the current situation of the student’s oral production for different types of questions? 2)What is frequency of turn-takings in the student’s oral production? 3)What is the accuracy, fluency and complexity of the student’s oral production? The major findings of this study are summarized as follows: 1)As for the time length of oral production,it is found that the average time of student’s oral production in each class is 22.8 minutes, taking up a bit more than 50% of the total class hour(45 minutes),the average number for display question is 12.1 in each class and for reference question is 2,the ratio is 6:1,indicating that students and oral English are taken as the center of class activities. In regard to the c-units,the student’s oral production of each display question accounts for 2.0 per lesson in average while that for each reference question amounts to 3.6,more than that of display questions.2)As to turn-taking,the average number of turn-takings in student’s oral production in each lesson is 59.1.Of it,the average number of words produced in each unit is 23.3,and that of phrase is 19.4,of sentences is 9.7,of paragraph is 3.9,and other is 2.8.3)As for vocabulary, the use of advanced vocabulary is very limited in the three segments only taking up 4.5%,3.0% and 5.6% respectively. In the aspect of speed, results demonstrate that it is about 55 words / minute in average. In regard to language proficiency,it is found that there exit inaccuracies in connecters, tense, article, number of nouns, etc. In consideration of the current situation of student’s oral production,it is suggested that joint attention of teachers and students should be given to oral training especially in the aspect of accuracy in senior middle school English teaching to further improve their oral ability. In addition, due to insufficient level ability and limited time and space, the study of students’ oral production in reading class is not thorough and detailed. Therefore, there are still many defects, such as: the size of sample in the study is not large enough, the coverage is not comprehensive enough. In future research, the author will analyze and compare the oral production of students in diverse senior high schools. |
