In 1660 s,after nearly two decades of turmoil, the Stuart dynasty was restored to power in England, and Charles II returned to London with the expectation of political stability.Despite reaching a consensus on welcoming back the king, all political factions in the country are still fighting against each other in an attempt to occupy a favorable political position in the new era.In the face of turbulent and complex situation, how to restore stability is the king’s first consideration.Charles II accomplished this task excellently in the early days of his reign, pulling England back from the fast track of the revolution and bringing the country back to an orderly life. However,it is surprising that "political tolerance" runs through his early governing philosophy, which is in sharp contrast to his father,Charles I.After taking power,Charles II did not retaliate on a large scale against the opposition, nor did he confer titles on the royal party.Instead,he carefully coordinated the relations between all parties, weighed the interests of all parties, and dealt with various issues in a relatively neutral manner. It is because of the king’s "political tolerance" that the political situation in the early restoration period can be restored to stability in a relatively fast time, thus laying a solid political foundation for the great development of all aspects of England in this period. This paper mainly introduces the political situation of England in the early days of Charles II’s reign and the manifestation and influence of political tolerance. In the early days of restoration,England still continued the struggle between Parliament and the army in the previous stage, and both sides had sharp contradictions in the fields of politics, religion and economy. In addition, the political situation is further complicated by the agitation of activists and the problems caused by land circulation. The king integrated the idea of political tolerance into his policy to resolve these contradictions and conflicts, which was manifested in three issues, the treatment of the opposition, religious tolerance and land issues.Although the political situation appeared some turbulence in the end of Charles II,and the idea of tolerance was abandoned. But for most of the time, the situation in England is relatively stable, and has made remarkable achievements in the fields of economy, science and culture, which is ready for the next century’s take-off.Through the study of British politics in this period,we can realize the important role of political tolerance in the British history. Not paranoid, not extreme, there aren’t only the characteristics of Britishpolitics, but also its advantages, which enables Britain to make steady progress in the treacherous modern history of Europe, and gradually from a small second-class country in a corner to a world-renowned "empire of the sun".
