Collocations And Semantic Interpretation Of The Serial Verb-Resultative Construction S+V₁+V₂+O From The Perspective Of Action Chain

The resultative construction refers to the syntactic structure consisting of a verb with a complement of the result.It is a commonly used construction in Chinese and is widely concerned by academic circles.However,there is still insufficient research on the serial verb-resultative construction“S+V₁+V₂+O”?Zh?ng S?n d?k?le L?Sì?.Based on the existing related research,this study builds the action chain event-semantics analysis framework under the guidance of the cognitive grammar's action chain theory and uses qualitative analysis to observe the relevant serial verb-resultative construction of the BCC Chinese corpus.The present study attaches importance to the essential characteristics,operation modes,collocations and semantic relations of the serial verb-resultative construction,aiming to reveal the cognitive mechanism within the syntactic and semantic structure and the relationship between people's general way of thinking and language expression.The major finds are as follows.Firstly,this construction is comprised of the subject?S?,two monosyllabic predicate verbs?V₁,V₂?and object?O?.S and O are both living entities;V₁and V₂are action verbs,indicating the causal event composed of the causing event dominated by S and the resulting event dominated by O.Secondly,under the effect of the causative action chain,its operation mode is shown as the occurrence of the first action event leads to the generation of the second action event;due to the influence of relevant factors,the dynamic change of force and semantic implication of the causal action events are different.Thirdly,constrained by the degree of animacy,S and O,for the most part,are human beings with agentive properties.The collocations of V₁and V₂are shown as transitive verbs plus intransitive verbs and so forth.The meaning of the construction is typical causative,which is manifested as a causative action chain contains a dependent action chain.Additionally,each instance shows its own unique semantic characteristics.Research reveals that this study deepens the understanding of the essence of serial verb-resultative construction to a certain extent,proves that the action chain theory has a strong explanatory power to the syntax and semantics of the Chinese construction from the cognitive point of view,and provides a new way for the academic community to further study the resultative construction.
