According to the latest statistics on the official website of Confucius institute headquarters/hanban,by March 2020,541 Confucius institutes and 1,170 Confucius classrooms had been set up in 162 countries and regions around the world.As a non-profit educational institution,the rapid development of Confucius institutes around the world has received extensive attention from domestic and foreign media,but also suffered from various disputes.Due to its special relationship with the Chinese government,many western media and scholars have raised many questions and criticisms on Confucius institutes,and some even strongly opposed them.What is the image of Confucius institutes in New Zealand? How do the local mainstream media report on Confucius institutes? How will these reports affect the development of Confucius institutes? In this paper,guided by these problems,the existing "Confucius institutes",on the basis of related research in New Zealand in the mainstream media news reports of the Confucius institute in 15 years as text analysis,concrete analysis of the Confucius institute in New Zealand media image and its development in New Zealand the change features of public opinion environment,in order to the sustainable development of Confucius institute in New Zealand to provide reference.Based on the consideration of sample coverage,accessibility and sample size,this paper selected the New Zealand Herald from 2005 to 2019 as the timeline.The Press;Four major media outlets,The Dominion Post and Otago Daily Times,received 67 valid samples.This paper makes a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the public opinion of Confucius institutes in New Zealand from the aspects of the number,length,type,subject and attitude of public opinion reports.To explore the media image of Confucius institutes in New Zealand.Based on the quantitative and discourse analysis of the reports on Confucius institutes by the mainstream media in New Zealand,it is found that the mainstream media in New Zealand pay more attention to Confucius institutes year by year,and their reports are mainly neutral and positive.The media image of the Confucius institute in New Zealand is as follows: as a folk communicator of interaction and communication;the authoritative political image of the official and elite;unique Chinese symbol image。...
