According to art critics,"artists are a group of people whose spirit feels the inspiration of emotional experience.They use language,paint,marble,body movements and other elements,and use their skills to express their in works of art,with the intention of driving the audience to produce the same emotion".Expressionism is "the natural expression of strong emotion".It is embraced by many artists,aestheticians and critics,and expressionism is also popular with those who appreciate art beyond traditional realism.This paper mainly starts from the origib of expressionist art in the early 20th century and discusses the application of metaphor in the works of artists in each period.The text of this paper is divided into four chapters.The first chapter discusses the definition and connotation of metaphor in semantics and its application in painting context.The second chapter mainly takes time line as the thread to describe the expressionism and its representative artists and societies popular in Germany after post-impressionism,as well as the development of abstract expressionism period and new expressionism period in modern times.The third chapter focuses on the representative of tradsitional expressionism,Edward Monk,and Emile Nolde,taking some of their works as an example to illustrate the concrete use of metaphorical techniques.The fourth chapter focuses on the new expressionism in the 1960s and 1970s,and discusses the symbolic significance of artists’ works in combination with the characteristics and background of the historical era at that time.The fourth chapter discusses the influence of expressionism art on their graduation creation in combination with their own creation.
