Researches On The Calligraphy Art Of Wen Juntian

Wen Juntian,born in a family of scholars for generations in Hubei Province,was a significant calligrapher and painter in the last century.In his early years,he studied knowledge with his cousin Wen Yiduo together,systematically engaged in calligraphy and painting learning.They influenced and nurtured each other,obtaining attainments in literature and history,painting,calligraphy,and inscriptions on ancient bronzes and stone tablets.He devoted his whole life to the creation,research and education of calligraphy and painting,and finally a unique artistic style and theory was formed.As an intellectual moving into a new era from the old days,Wen Juntian was relatively high in the political ladder.After the reform and opening up,he was hardly involved in any political movement,just continued to create his painting and calligraphy quietly and calmly,and lived a simple life.Wen Juntian’s calligraphy was characterized by flat wide pattern,power and nature,showing a scholar’s style.He was proficient in different character fonts,including seal character,official script and regular script and running hand,and focusing on copying and reading the copybooks.In addition,he was also proficient in other aspects such as poetry and painting.Wen Juntian learned from many great masters such as Chen Shizeng,Liang Gongyue and Xiao Junxian,and he was instructed by a lot of scholars in Ming and Qing Dynasties who inspired him to some extent in writing and interpreting characters.The purpose of this paper is to analyze Wen Juntian’s calligraphy art in combination with his attainments in traditional Chinese painting.Meantime,the author makes an all-round investigation,analysis and research on his life overview,calligraphy thought,calligraphy style,family origin,background of the times,factors of artistic style formation,etc.Although Wen Juntian is famous for his artistic achievements in traditional Chinese painting,it never means that he was not good at calligraphy.At present,no research works on Wen Juntian’s calligraphy art system has been found,so the author sorts out the information in detail,hoping to fill the gap for the research of Hubei modern calligraphers,turn a new page,and lay a foundation for the future research and learning.
