| When a text is studied in the translation, the core element of the text, cohesion, should be put high on the agenda. The cohesion of the text is not only reflected in the internal structures of sentences and connection between sentences, but in the connection between paragraphs and the layout of the whole text. For this reason, only by bearing the awareness of cohesion in mind, can the translator understand source text accurately and render target text faithfully. There are both similarities and dissimilarities in textual cohesion between English and Chinese. Therefore,in the E-C translation,it has become a problem worth exploring that how to deal with these cohesive devices and make sure that the meaning, logic and style of the source text are reflected in the target text so as to achieve equivalence and remove the barriers for readers. The thesis is a translation report on Chapter 3 excerpted from The Evolution of Language. In accordance with textual cohesion theory co-authored by Halliday and Hasan, the translator makes a contrastive analysis of the cohesive devices between English and Chinese. Moreover, the appropriate expressions are chosen by the translator to reconstruct the target text based on the understanding of the cohesive devices in the source text so as to make the readers of the target text understand the source text as accurately as possible. In this regard, the difficulties encountered by the translator and the suitable translation strategies, including preservation, conversion and omission of the original cohesive items are discussed in detail built on translator’s translation practice of The Evolution of Language. |
