This is a report on the translation of The Case Against Education: Why the Education System is a Waste of Time and Money.The translator selected Chapters 6 to7 of the book as the source text.In the source text,the author lists a large number of facts to discusses the relationship between signaling and the social return to education,and further expresses the view that “Today’s American education system is a waste of time and money,so we need to cut fat from the curriculum and subsidies for tuition to avoid the educational waste”.Guided by Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the translator uses appropriate translation skills and methods to solve some problems encountered in translation,such as the translation of polysemy,idioms and slang,metaphors as well as difficult sentences.The translation report is divided into four parts.The first chapter describes the translation project,including an introduction to the said book and the author,an analysis of the source text,the significance of the translation project and the structure of this report.The second chapter introduces the translation process,including the preparation stage,while-translation stage,as well as the quality control of the translation.The third chapter is a case study,which is the central part of the whole report.It introduces the functional equivalence theory and translation skills,and analyzes the difficulties and problems encountered in translation with the corresponding translation skills and methods under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory.The fourth chapter is a concluding part of the report,including the difficulties encountered in translation,translation experiences and limitations.
