| This thesis analyzes 52 weekly speeches given by President Trump,using both quantitative and qualitative methods,to explore: 1)the linguistic styles used to present Trump's major concerns;2)the kind of presidential images Trump projects to construct,convey and embody his ideology and power relations;3)the social antecedents that shaped Trump's linguistic features and the projection of his presidential image.The study employs a corpus-based method for the quantitative portion of the analysis and Fairclough's three-dimensional analysis model for critical discourse analysis for its qualitative aspects.First,analysis and classification of the key words identifies their co-location and concordance in order to illuminate both the linguistic features and the unique language styles of Trump and also reveal his ideologies which are demonstrated in his policy concerns.Then,deeply analysis of the distribution of modal verbs and personal pronouns shows that Trump uses modality to construct his power relations and convey ideologies,then to shape the unique images of the president.Finally,by putting the results presented from linguistic features in the context of current American society,it also reveals the political,economic,social and other causes that provoked them.The research concludes that Trump's language is essentially ideological.The linguistic features in the discourse depend on the ideology of the discourse producer and the social environment in which the discourse is generated;in turn,the unique linguistic features effect upon the constitution of the society they generate.Trump,a president whose career background is business,maintains different cognition and thinking from traditional politicians.At the same time,his unique language styles and presidential images have a significant impact on the political speech discourse and ecological environment in America. |
