In recent years,there have been increasing studies on English reading comprehension from the perspective of cognitive psychology.Most of the studies have explored the relation between metalinguistic awareness and English reading comprehension from one cognitive skill,while few studies have investigated the influence on English reading comprehension systematically.Furthermore,though English metalinguistic awareness and rapid naming are closely related to oral vocabulary,and oral vocabulary is one of essential components predicting reading comprehension,there is still no research to look at whether or not English metalinguistic awareness and rapid naming can affect reading comprehension through the mediation of oral vocabulary.Therefore,this study took as subjects 103 fifth and sixth graders from the Affiliated Primary School of Changle Teachers’ school in Fuzhou and sought to comprehensively investigate the influence of metalinguistic awareness,including phonological awareness,morphological awareness and orthographic awareness,rapid naming and oral vocabulary on Chinese children’s English reading comprehension.Results from regression and mediation analyses showed that:(1)English inflectional morphology,oral vocabulary and compound awareness are significant predictors of Chinese children’s English reading comprehension;(2)English inflectional morphology,phonological awareness,compound awareness and rapid digit naming can significantly predict Chinese children’s English oral vocabulary;(3)English inflectional morphology and compound awareness partially act on English reading comprehension through the English oral vocabulary as the mediator.Theoretically,this study has uncovered the mediating effect of English oral vocabulary in the relation between English morphological awareness and reading comprehension,which opens up new horizons for further study.Pedagogically,teachers should attach more importance to the teaching and training of English morphological awareness and oral vocabulary.
