A Study Of Subtitle Translation Of Animated Film Big Hero Six From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

With a growing number of good English animated films pouring into China,subtitle translation has become the common demand of Chinese market.At present there are more and more scholars paying attention to the study of film subtitle translation,but it is far from enough,and fewer efforts are made to do research on animated films.Therefore,the field of subtitle translation of animated films has yet to be developed.The thesis,under the guidance of Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory,analyzes some typical examples taken from an English animated film Big Hero Six,aiming to provide useful guidance for the practice of subtitle translation of animated films.The examples,selected from Big Hero Six and categorized into different levels,are analyzed under the guidance of three translation principles as follows: economy,equivalent effect and comprehensibility.It can be concluded from the analysis of the examples that these three subtitle translation principles obtained from the in-depth study of Communicative Translation Theory can play an important role in guiding the subtitle translation of English animated films.Under the guidance of the principle of economy,the more concise language,on the premise of assuring the original is not ruined,is more conducive for younger viewers to appreciate a film.Under the guidance of the principle of equivalent effect,the choice of words and building of sentences should take into account the differences between the two languages especially their different codes of language so as to achieve the same communicative effect.Under the principle of comprehensibility,the cultural elements of source language should be transferred according to the cultural background and convention of target language and the linguistic style of target language should be seriously followed,which can facilitate younger viewers’ understanding of subtitles.In a word,the thesis attempts to prove the applicability of Communicative Translation Theory in guiding subtitle translation of animated films,which is of a certain theoretical value and practical significance.
