"Letter from an unknown Woman" is a novella written by the famous Austrian writer Stephen Zweig in 1922.It is mainly about a woman who wrote a letter to a man at the time of her death,telling him the story that she had loved him silently all her life,and he did not know.More than 80 years later,the novel was brought to the screen by Chinese young female director Xu Jing lei in 2005.The woman director who received the title of talented woman who received higher education has incorporated her own view of women and love in the process of film adaptation.She has her own unique narrative style.The image of a strange woman in the film The Letter is completely different from the novel.This article mainly expounds from the aspects of the female image in "Letter",the view of writers and directors,the presentation of female consciousness in the film "Letter" and the dilemma of female consciousness brought by "Letter".By analyzing the film's adaptation of the novel,we can see that Xu Jing lei's image of strange women in the film not only gave strong female consciousness,but also left the audience with infinite thinking space through the dilemma of female consciousness implied in it: Women's liberation has gone through a century from May 4th to the present.Are women's lives,emotions,and consciousness truly liberated,and are women truly happy now? By analyzing the film "Letter" and combining the works of current female directors and writers,this paper analyzes the current situation and dilemma of women,and makes some references for women's survival.
