An E-C Translation Report On Justice On Trial(Chapter One)

This paper is an English-Chinese translation practice report.The source text is from Justice on Trial —The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court co-authored by news editor Mollie Ziegler Hemingway and commentator Carrie Severino.The book describes a major political issue in the United States in 2018—the process and impact of the nomination and confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.Up to now,there is no Chinese translation of the book.The translator chose the first chapter of the book for translation.In the source text of this translation,there are many proper nouns,phrases and sentences with professional background knowledge.How to translate these linguistic elements and make readers understand the cultural source behind them is a great challenge for translators.The translator analyzes the cultural background and adopts annotation and meaning extension to solve these problems.Therefore,the translation should not only convey the original information accurately,but also be smooth and logical.In addition,English and Chinese belong to different language families and their language characteristics are very distinct.The translator uses the strategy of domestication,the methods of amplification,adjustment of sentence order,and free translation to make the translation convey the original information accurately and conform to the Chinese expression habit.Through this translation,the translator understands that translation is not only the transformation between linguistic symbols,but also the medium of cultural communication.In addition,in the translation process,the translator realized her narrow range of knowledge and the poor acquaintance of some professional fields make it difficult to understand the real meaning of the original text and optimize the translation.
