While the practice of rewriting the literary history is constantly carried out in the Chinese academic circle,the overseas sinological circle centered on North America also rewrites the history of Chinese literature.The Columbia History of Chinese Literature and The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature are the products of rewriting.They have distinctive features and referential mutually,representing the highest level of research on the history of Chinese literature in the Western Sinology.The exploration of the writing characteristics about the two literary histories is not only a positive attempt to re-examine the Chinese literary tradition from the perspective of Sinologists and participate in the world dialogue of literary history research actively,but also a new way to reposition our current and future native literary history with the help of the other's vision,so as to explores the possible new path for the rewriting of the current ancient Chinese literary history.Therefore,this thesis attempts to establish a reference system for the writing of Chinese literary history at home and abroad.In the frame of reference,this thesis makes a more systematic explanation of the writing features on the history of Chinese literature in North America centering on The Columbia History of Chinese Literature and The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature.The first chapter introduces and sorts out the writing process of Chinese literary history in North America,analyzes and summarizes the writing tendency of Chinese literary history in North America.This paper discusses the writing of the history of Chinese literature in North America as a whole in reference to the versions of Chinese classical ancient literary history since the 1980 s.The second chapter analyzes the overall characteristics of The Columbia History of Chinese Literature,mainly from three perspectives: the new interpretation under the genre structure,the thematic exploration under the overall view and the reexamination from the perspective of interaction.And “boundary”,“panorama” and “interaction” are the three key words in the discussion.The third chapter discusses the writing characteristics of The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature,mainly from three aspects: rewriting oriented by cultural history,focusing on the writing strategy about the mechanism of literary change and rethinking based on material culture,aiming to explore how to rewrite it from the perspective of cultural history.The fourth chapter mainly reviews the history of Chinese literature in North America(Centering on The Columbia History of Chinese Literature and The Cambridge History of Chinese Literature)and the history of Chinese classic ancient literature in China since 1980 s,and discusses their different writing emphases and reasons.In addition,the thesis considers that the analysis of the writing characteristics of the Chinese literary history in North America also brings some enlightenment to our rewriting of the current Chinese literary history: Rewriting is not an overnight process,but a process that needs constant revision and examination;In order to solve the problem on homogenization of literary history writing,the innovation of ideas is the most important,it is impossible to write a new literary history with the same or similar compilation ideas;The narrative mode centered on cultural discourse is not suitable for the teaching of literary history in China which needs to give consideration to the appreciation of literature.We need to find a path that suits us better.
