Representation Of Interpersonal Meaning In The Translation Of Dialogues In Emma

In fictions,dialogues are crucial to the portrait of characters.They also contain rich interpersonal meaning,which is one of the major concepts in Systemic Functional Linguistics.Through dialogues,the speaker can demonstrate many aspects of interpersonal meaning,like personalities,emotions,attitudes,intentions,identity,power relations and so on.Therefore,it is necessary to accurately reconstruct interpersonal meaning in the translation of dialogues.Taking Emma and the two selected Chinese versions as its research materials,this thesis conducts a study of the translation of dialogues from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics.The study is intended to examine how interpersonal meaning realized by mood system and modality system is reproduced in the translation of dialogues.This thesis is a qualitative research and it uses case study as the method.It analyzes the reconstruction of interpersonal meaning in terms of mood system and modality system.The findings are presented as follows.Firstly,the devices that have impact on the representation of interpersonal meaning include mood choices,the choice of Subject,metaphors of mood,modal values and metaphors of modality.Secondly,there is loss of interpersonal meaning in both the selected Chinese versions of Emma.Faithfulness to the original forms used to express interpersonal meaning does not necessarily mean the successful reconstruction of interpersonal meaning in the target text.Due to the differences between the English and Chinese languages,The choice of specific lexical devices is also of great significance.Lastly,the acceptability of the target readers should be taken into consideration while reconstructing interpersonal meaning in dialogues.Modal particles in Chinese are effective tools to vividly demonstrate personalities and express the speaker'semotions and attitudes.
