Despite the growth of material wealth nowadays, the whole society has been suffering from joylessness for a long time,so exploring the secret of joy is of vital importance. The source text of this report is an excerpt from Joyful:The Surprising Power of Ordinary Things to Create Extraordinary Happiness. The book reveals potential sources of joy, offering a new perspective for readers to find a joyful and happy life by introducing ten“aesthetics of joy".As a social science text, the source text, featuring vivid, plain and contagious language style, can be classified as an informative-oriented text with expressive and appellative functions based on Reiss’s text typology. This report applies Cooperative Principle and its four maxims proposed by Grice,an American scholar,to this translation task.In general, translators should obey the four maxims as much as they could. But when a clash caused by cultural gaps or linguistic divergences appears, translators can also reject to obey one of these maxims so as to guarantee smooth cooperation in translation. To this end,the source text is rendered with the methods and skills including literal translation, division, combination, inversion, transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation in order to observe the four maxims. If the maxim of Quantity and the maxim of Quality collide with each other, translation skills like amplification, annotation and paraphrase are flexibly used to obey the maxim of Quality. This report concludes that Cooperative Principle can be used to guide the rendering of the source text.
