Buddhist temples are places where Buddhist statues are placed for monks and nuns to practice Buddhism and Taoism.They also have religious,cultural and social attributes.During the Sui and Tang Dynasties,the eastern capital Luoyang area witnessed a very prosperous development of Buddhism,with various sects,Buddhist temples all over the country,a large number of monks and nuns,and a growing influence of Buddhism.This paper focuses on the Buddhist temple architecture in Luoyang City in Sui and Tang Dynasties,mainly including the Daochang in the palace city,the Buddhist temple in Lifang district and the Sutra turning hall.Based on the historical materials such as the records of Historical Biographies,poems and Buddhist scriptures,and in combination with the archaeological materials such as epitaphs and inscriptions unearthed in recent years,this paper analyzes the origin,time,location evolution,anecdotes,shape layout,construction and composition of the temple architecture in Luoyang City in Sui and Tang Dynasties As far as possible,systematic and comprehensive research should be done in the aspects of cloth rules and salient features.In addition,the author makes a collection and textual research of many ancient books and monographs,such as Tang Huiyao,Zhenguan public and private painting history,Tang two capital city square test,Tang Five Dynasties Buddhist temple collection test,and corrects the mistakes and improprieties in the previous studies.The Buddhist temples in the counties near Luoyang are not included in this paper.
