RENT is a musical drama created by American musical writer Jonathan Larson in the 90s.the script creativity comes from dramatic Billy Aronson.On April 29,1996,RENT gave the first performance at the Nederland Theatre and has won awards like the Pulitzer Prize,Antoinette Perry Award,and Obie Award.It can be regarded as the legend and classic of Broadway at that time which aroused attention in the whole world.Based on La Bohème,the classic opera created by Giacomo Puccini,RENT spans time and space and tells a story of a group of young people in New York.AIDS is a problem puzzling them.At the same time,new problems emerged in that era including homo-sexuality,bi-sexuality,and cross-gender.The life of the bottom artists in the late 20~thh century was shown perfectly.On music,a series of musical elements such as rock,folk,blues,gospel,Tango indicated the globalization and modernization at that period.Through the analysis on the characterization of Joanne and the aria,this paper can be divided into three chapters.The first chapter briefly introduces the creating background of RENT,its social significance,plot,main character relationship,dramatic structure,and musical style.In the second chapter,it analyzes the characterization of Joanne from three aspects,including task orientation and music style,dramatic image and body design,and ria analysis.Last but not least,this paper puts forward some enlightenments of the characterization of Joanne and concludes the difficulties and countermeasures encountered by the author,as well as some positive significance of stage practice.
