The development of Chinese folk and traditional music theory needs to be reviewed by placing it in the historical context,this theory was introduced into professional music conservatories in China in the 1950 s and 1960 s as a completely new subject.In 1956,Shanghai Conservatory of Music established National Music Department,which involved 3 disciplines : Chinese national instrumental music,Chinese national music composition(called Chinese national band guidance at that time)and Chinese national music theory.Since then,the education of folk and traditional music has developed rapidly.We need to look at a problem from different perspectives if attempting to explore the profound connotation.I summarizes the development context of the folk and traditional music theory in Shanghai Conservatory of Music,and the discipline construction,talent training,teaching,curriculum setting and textbook achievements of the major established by the National Music Department of Shanghai Conservatory of Music from 1956 to1966.we should hold that attaching importance to the study of national music theory is not to blindly reject the Western music theories and techniques,but to make continuous efforts to build a complete and advanced folk and traditional music theory system,insist that "national uniqueness leads to the path of global acceptance" and promote,and cultivate students’ cultural confidence and patriotism.
