Based on the novel of the same name,the opera "Struggles in an ancient city" was written and performed by the general administration of music and dance troupe,which is a modern national opera about the war of resistance against Japan.In addition,the play successfully created a number of authentic characters.Taking the soprano character "Jinhuan" in the play as the research object,this paper discusses the problems related to the characterization by taking her two classical arias as examples.The text is divided into three chapters,the first chapter is an overview of the opera "Struggles in an ancient city",the second chapter is the characterization of the "Jinhuan" in "Forever in the mood for love" and "Smell the flowers after winning",The third chapter is about the meaning of characterization in folk opera.The first chapter is divided into two parts.The first part introduces the creation background of the opera,including the creation background,the reasons and the creative experience and characteristics of the creators;The second part is an overview of the content of the opera,respectively introduced the story outline,the main role and the voice,the heroine "Jinhuan" and its arias.The second chapter is the focus of this paper,in this party,the comparison and analysis of the two arias are made from five parts: language expression,personality,stage image,music performance and the author’s singing experience.The language expression is mainly reflected in the novel lyrics,which provide a direct medium for the audience to understand the characters;Character characteristics are mainly discussed from the psychological aspects of the characters.Psychological changes in different situations play a crucial role in enriching the character image;The use of performing means such as technique,footstep and eyes is a necessary means to show the stage image;terms of music performance,based on the analysis of the arias,this paper analyzes the control and flexible use of sound skills;The author’s singing experience is mainly analyzed from the problems of singing and performing in the process of learning these two arias.The so-called characterization is to shape the inner world and outer body of the characters,and accurate and profound characterization of the characters is the foundation of the shaping of the image.Therefore,only when a single character is endowed with typical personality and profound dramatic conflicts can a convincing character image be created.In the process of characterization,we should consider opera as a comprehensive art and integrate all aspects into a whole,so as to reflect the spiritual temperament of the characters and the uniqueness of the performers’ interpretation,enhance the appeal and performance of the play and promote the development of the story.Therefore,the author discusses the importance of characterization in national opera in the last chapter.
