Britain is the largest colonial country in modern times and its colonial expansion has a great influence on the evolution of modern history and geography politics in the world. The colonial expansion laid the material foundation for the rise of British and promoted the development of European capitalism, but also caused the poor in Africa,Asia,Latin America. There are few books on the history of British colonialism in a comprehensive and detailed way and there are few Chinese versions from the perspective of the British author's research.British Colonial Empire written by Alfred Caldecott fully describes the bud,the rise and the decline of the British colonization. The author excerpted the first chapter and the fifth chapter as the translation material and employed Hermeneutic translation theory to guide the translation practice so as to provide reference for British colonial history researchers and history lovers. The report mainly includes five parts, the first part is the introduction, which mainly introduces the background and significance of the translation practice;the second part is the task description, including text analysis and requirements from the entrusting party. The author analyzed the original text from the aspects of lexical, syntactic, textual and so on.The third part is the translation process, which mainly includes before, during and after translation. Before translation, the author prepared relevant translation dictionaries and online resources, formulated translation plans and glossary, selected the Chinese translation of the Rise and Fall of the British Empire by Laurence James as the parallel text of this translation practice, and determined George Steiner's Hermeneutic translation to guide the practice and solved the problem of long and difficult sentences by using translation techniques such as Addition,Omission,Division,Combination and Shift. In translation, the author used Julian House's Translation Quality Evaluation Model to compare the original text with the target text from three aspects: tenor, field and mode,so as to strictly control the translation quality. After translation, the translator himself, peers and advisor evaluated the quality of the target text;the fourth part is case analysis, which illustrated in detail how to use Hermeneutic translationtheory to guide translation practice through examples. The fifth part is a summary of this translation practice. The deficiency and major findings of the translation practice report were described.Through the translation practice, the author found that Hermeneutic translation theory can also guide historical texts.Trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation can solve the difficult problems in the translation process, which will provide reference for relevant translation practice.
