Many outstanding musicians have sprung up in China since the reform and opening up.Tan Dun is one of them.Memories of Eight Watercolors, the first piano suite composed by Tan Dun when he just joined the Central Conservatory of music in 1978,is of great research value. The piano piece combines the unique elements of Chinese folk music(the elements of Chu folk music in Hunan Province)with the western modern composing techniques, brings forth bold innovation from the tradition;in addition,it combines "music and painting",so that each "watercolor painting" in the music has a refreshing artistic beauty. This article will analyze the work in terms of its creation and performance with the background of the author and creation of this piece,so as to provide reference for more detailed interpretation. It is expected that the research result can contribute to a better understanding of the creative elements and playing methods as well as a more accurate performance of this work, furthermore, other learners can gain benefit in understanding and playing this work.
