Research On The Novels Of SHUNPAO In The Late Qing Dynasty (1907-1911)

The SHUNPAO attempted to insert the novel in the early days of its publication in 1872,but it was soon discontinued and it wasn’t until 1907 that the novel was republished.The SHUNPAO published numerous original novel and translated fiction between 1907 to 1911.To be more specific,original novel centers mostly on the criticism of officialdom and disclosing political darkness,and it is divided into pattern of serial novels and non-serial novels.The works of Traditional Chinese Novel including Freedom Female,Embroidrey Garment Thief,were changed in a tradition popular style,which has certain creativity.Besides,works such as Funny Guy and Manqing’s Biography in non-serial novels were written in modern fiction mode,which has the consciousness of modernity.Short original fictions,its main purpose is not only to arouse national consciousness and pay attention to the timely reflection of current affairs,but also describe social customs and people’s livelihood by a wide range of subjects in which seriousness and interest coexist.The translated novel published in SHUNPAO mainly from American and European countries,with distinct features,mostly are detective story and romantic fiction.Although most authors and translators of the translated novels is difficult to identify,Zhang Chunfang is one of the famed translators who can be identified.There are no lack of considerable world masterpieces in the short translated fictions of SHUNPAO,such as Shakespeare’s and fairy tales.The novels of SHUNPAO published from 1907 to 1911,an epitome of the press novel in the Late Qing Dynasty,influence the Late-Qing novel profoundly and facilitate Chinese modern novel’s development.
