Cultivating and improving students' mathematical literacy is the main goal of mathematics education at the present stage of compulsory education.Chinese scholars' research on mathematical literacy has been increasing year by year,but there are few investigations and studies on the current situation of students' mathematical literacy in ethnic minority areas.Referencing the idea of the PISA mathematic literacy and the assessment tools,selecting ninth-grade students from five different schools and six mathematics teachers in X County junior middle schools as the participants,the purpose of this study is to achieve the following objectives: revealing the current situation of mathematics literacy of grade nine students in X County;knowing the understanding of local mathematics teachers on mathematics literacy;providing suggestions for improving the mathematics literacy of junior middle school students in Minority Areas.The survey results show that: 1.the overall performance of the ninth gra--de students in X County is good,but there are distinct characteristics of gen--der differences,regional differences and ethnic differences;2.as a whole,the relationship between teachers and students shows a good situation,students' att--endance performance is so excellent,students' motivation for math learning is strong,but there are some problems,such as inadequate funding for preschool education,weak sense of belonging in school,and high level of the students' mathematical anxiety;3.the scores of mathematics literacy test are correlated with 13 learners' individual characteristics,such as math self-efficacy,learning persistence and so on;4.the local mathematics teachers' understanding of the connotation of mathematics literacy is still at a relatively vague stage,teachers believe that students' uneven level,examination pressure and other factors will hinder their cultivation for students' mathematical literacy,the teachers are very positive about the help of the National Primary and Secondary School TeacherTraining Program to the growth of teachers.Based on the results of the survey,the following suggestions are given: 1.teachers should pay attention to the influence of sex differences in the process of teaching and should not blindly pursue achievements;2.the rural education work should be strengthened;3.pre-school education should be strengthened;4.teachers should create a good campus cultural environment and guide students to correctly view their achievements;5.increasing opportunities for teachers to participate in study activities such as the National Primary and Secondary Sch--ool Teacher Training Program;6.in order to lay a foundation for the success of basic education reform,we should adjust the current evaluation methods of students and teachers.
