With the promotion of China's opening up and the deepening of globalization, more and more international students come to China to study. They have played an important role in China's economic development, cultural communication and the spread of China's image.Although the research on the group of international students originated from sociology, with the deepening of the research on this topic,it shows more characteristics and elements of tourism and cross-cultural behavior. For international students, living abroad, they will encounter difficulties such as language barrier and cultural differences. In the cross-cultural adaptation of studying abroad, tourism is an effective method of cultural contact and adaptation. The generation and change of tourism motivation in different stages of studying abroad is also a theoretical and practical problem worth exploring.Under such a background, this paper takes tourism motivation in the cross-cultural adaptation as the starting point, based on the experience data of international students in China, using qualitative research methods such as grounded theory and auto-ethnography.from the perspective of “outsiders” and “insiders”,this paper studies the formation process and dynamic changes of international students' tourism motivation in China.Based on the literature review of tourism motivation and cross-cultural adaptation, this paper involve in-depth interview with 25 South Korean international students in China.Using the grounded theory to a three-level coding analyze the types and forming factors of the international students' tourism motivation in China, the changing process and influencing factors of the tourism motivation, and construct a theoretical model.Based on the theoretical model of grounded theory, according to chronological order and cultural adaptability, this research expounds the author's tourism experience in the period of studying in China, and sort out the changing process of tourism motivation. And then, this paper probes into the change factors of tourism motivation that the author feels. The conclusion of the study are as follows:(1)the motivation of international students in China can be divided into five types, pursuing novelty, social communication,self-development,relaxation / escaping, and getting rid of familiarity.(2)The main elements of the formation of tourism motivation in China are divided into four core factors: promotion factor, tourism information, constraint factor and overcoming factor.Based on the process of psychological needs—tourism motivation—tourism behavior, tourism information, constraint factor and overcoming factor have significant influence on the formation of tourism motivation.(3)Based on the model of cultural adaptation that has been studied, the change process of international students' tourism motivation in China shows the state of "pursuing novelty?social communication/self-development/relaxation and escaping? get rid of familiarity/pursuing novelty?social communication/relaxation and escaping".(4)The influencing factors of the change of tourism motivation in China are divided into two core factors: cultural adaptation and tourism constraint.Cultural adaptation is a positive factor in the life of international students in China.Tourism constraint is a negative change factor of life and tourism in China.(5)According to analysis of the author's self-reflection process, the change of tourism motivation is consistent with the theoretical model obtained by grounded theory.Based on the study of the students in China, using the grounded theory and auto-ethnography,this paper attempts to explore the motivation of international students' tourism in China and its changing process in theory. The results of this study provide practical implications for international non-governmental communication, tourism market segmentation, indepth tourism product development, and management programs for international students.
