In this study,the relationship of process performances of biological nitrogen removal and conductivity variation was investigated,and MFCs which are based on ANAMMOX and denitrification?ANAMMOX-MFC and ANAMMOX-DN MFC?were developed to investigate the performance of simultaneous biological Removal of nitrogen and electricity generation.The main results are as follows.?1?ANAMMOX-MFC was constructed by inoculating ammonium oxidizing bacteria enriched cultures into the anode chamber.Experiment results showed that the start-up time of ANAMMOX-MFC was 45 days.The removal efficiency of ammonia and nitrite reached more than 90%,when the substrate NH4+-N and NO2--N concentration were 50 mg L-1and 66 mg L-1,respectively.The effluent NO3--N concentration was lower than 4 mg L-1.The maximum voltage was 75.4 mV,and the maximum power density was 468.3 mW/m3.?2?The optimum pH range for the ANAMMOX-MFC reactor was6.5-8.5.The removal efficiency of NH4+-N and NO2--N were decreased by 11%and 12%,when the substrate concentration was reduced by 0.5times.However,the nitrogen removal efficiency remained at above 90%,when the substrate concentration increased by 1.5 and 2 times.The voltage of electricity production was not varied with the substrate concentration variation.Adding low concentration organic matter?C:N=0.5:1?improved nitrogen removal performance and power generation.?3?The start-up time of ANAMMOX-DN MFC was 30 days.The anode nitrogen removal efficiency was more than 80%,the average maximum voltage was 58.7mV,with the maximum power density287.1mW/m3.Data showed that the nitrogen removal performance and power generation was lower than that of ANAMMOX-MFC.?4?TheoptimalpHrangeforanodicdenitrificationof ANAMMOX-DN MFC was 6.5-8.5.The removal efficiency of NH4+-N and NO2--N were decreased,when the substrate concentration was reduced by 0.5 times.However,the nitrogen removal efficiency could reach at 99%,when the substrate concentration increased by 1.5 and 2times.Adding low concentration organic matter?C:N=0.5-2:1?improved nitrogen removal performance.Anammox-DN MFC has higher impact resistance against organic compounds shock.
