Rutile is an important raw material for the production of titanium dioxide.As the demand for titanium dioxide increases,the demand for rutile is increasing.Flotation is an economical production process for recovering mineral resources.Collectors are an important component in flotation reagents and are the key to flotation.This study investigate the flotation mechanism of octyl hydroxamic acid,sodium lauryl sulfate and mixed collectors on rutile.In the flotation test,the flotation performance of octyl hydroxamic acid,sodium lauryl sulfate and their mixed use on rutile was studied.The results show that lead nitrate can active rutile float,which can greatly reduce the flotation concentration of octyl hydroxamic acid after activation.Sodium dodecyl sulfate can float rutile after activation of lead nitrate also.The best synergy performance was reached at the molar ratio of octyl hydroxamic acid with sodium lauryl sulfate is 3:1,which not only increase the recovery of rutile but also reduce the concentration of octyl hydroxamic acid.The adsorption of lead nitrate on rutile surface was studied by chemical solution of flotation,zeta potential analysis,ICP and XPS.At pH=6.5,chemical solution of flotation show the surface of the rutile is highly susceptible to adsorption of hydroxyl groups,and the dominant component in the lead nitrate solution is Pb2+.The zeta potential analysis found that the surface of the rutile can adsorb Pb2+and the potential of rutile surface shift from negative to positive.The adsorption behavior of lead nitrate on rutile shows that the adsorption isotherm model of Pb2+on rutile surface agree with Langmuir isotherm model.XPS analysis of rutile after treat with lead nitrate showed that Pb2+adsorbed on the rutile surface and formation Pb?OH?+component.The mechanism of flotation of rutile by different collectors was studied by zeta potential analysis,adsorption capacity,XPS.When octyl hydroxamic acid is directly floated to rutile,the effective component molecular-ion associate forms a hydrophobic surface by acting with the titanium atom on the rutile surface.The present of lead nitrate can increase the adsorption site of octyl hydroxamic acid on the rutiles urface and the adsorption capacity on rutile.The collector interaction with the lead on the surface of rutile to form lead octyl hydroxamate.After the activation of lead nitrate,sodium lauryl sulfate is adsorbed by the interaction with lead on the rutile surface and to form lead dodecyl sulfate,thereby mineral surface can achieve hydrophobicity surface.The mixed collector can not only increase the recovery of rutile but also reduce the concentration of octyl hydroxamic acid.When flotation with mixd collector,sodium lauryl sulfate can increase the adsorption capacity of octyl hydroxamic acid on rutile.XPS analysis found that octyl hydroxamic acid and sodium lauryl sulfate could be adsorbed together on rutile surface and to form lead octyl hydroxamate,lead lauryl sulfate,respectivity.
