As China's national vocal music develops to this day, many creations with new subjects have emerged.Among them, the most unignorable part should be vocals inherited and innovated on the basis of traditional national instrumental music.Compared with traditional vocal creations, such kind of adapted music has more profound connotations and cultural deposits. So in this article, the author takes two classic and representative works,Fishing Boat in the Evening and Lofty Mountains and Flowing Water,as examples for exploration and analysis. These two works are created with two different adaptation concepts.Fishing Boat in the Evening is adapted from a traditional guzheng(16~25-stringed Chinese zither)piece. Both the melody and artistic conception of its vocal are based on the original music. It is a classic work among China's vocals adapted from instrumental music. The title of Lofty Mountains and Flowing Water is derived from a historical allusion,i.e.,“Bo Ya smashed a guqin(7-stringed Chinese zither)to lament for his bosom friend”.Originally, there were two versions, guqin music and guzheng music. Both are masterpieces in their respective instrumental music fields. The adapted vocals are based on the artistic conception of the original instrumental music. The writing of melody and accompaniment has been innovated boldly. They are masterpieces that combine traditional vocal creation technique with modern pop music creation technique. They continue the strong “ink painting” style of the original instrumental music and add pop music elements to the ancient rhythms,so that the melody can become graceful,rigid-flexible and have a unique musical charm.Based on the experience in playing instrumental music version and singing vocal music, the author carries out an in-depth study into these two vocals adapted from instrumental music, grasps the artistic characteristics and structural features of these two works and makes a singing analysis from the use of pronunciation, breath and resonance,as well as the interpretation of artistic conception.
