Phonetic teaching,as an essential part in English teaching, not only enriches the students’ phonetic knowledge and improves the level of pronunciation, but also helps to cultivate and promote the ability of listening, speaking in English. At the same time, higher level of phonetic ability is beneficial to efficient oral communication. But at present, under the restriction of examination system, most teachers prefer to focus on vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing in middle school, which leads to insufficient attention to phonetic teaching and inadequate inquiry into phonetic teaching methods. In traditional teaching, teachers mostly center on phonetic knowledge, practice methods are relatively simple and so are students’ strategies of phonetic learning, resulting in the poor learning effectiveness of English pronunciation, the shortage of English phonetic knowledge and the low level of pronunciation.Pronunciation is the basis of spoken communication, and the low level of pronunciation renders students’ poor expression and poor communication ability. In view of this, the author tried to apply production-oriented approach to the teaching of phonetics in high schools,in order to detect the effectiveness at the segmental and suprasegmental levels. Two classes with no significant differences were selected as the experimental class and the control class. The thesis, through the experimental research, argues whether the employment of production-oriented approach can boost the effectiveness at the segmental and suprasegmental levels.Through the phonetic pre-test and post-test,we can gain the error rate at the segmental and suprasegmental levels. Then we analysed two classes before and after the experiment by using independent samples T,and analysed the same class before the experiment and after the experiment by using paired samples T.The author can come to the conclusion that the production-oriented approach can improve the effectiveness of learning at the segmental and suprasegmental levels.
