Hao Datong is an important figure who is proficient in Shushu methods(some people see as forecastology methods)and Chou-I theory of the Quanzhen School of Taoism during Song and Yuan Dynasty.Shushu methods is a vital section of traditional Chinese culture, which has gone through the entire Chinese civilization and has had an influence in almost every part of ordinary people’s daily life. This paper is aimed to achieve an in-depth view of Hao Datong’s theory in Shushu based on the intensive reading of his work collection Articles from Taigu. The introduction basically talks about the significance of this topic, literature review and the main research methods. The first chapter is a biography of Hao Datong. He was born to a scholar-official in Shandong province. He was addicted to Taoism,fortune-telling and Chou-I theory since childhood. He once was the pupil of Wang Chongyang and practised Taoist meditation with him.He also had several chances to be taught the essences of Taoism and I-Ching by unusual people, and this experience has an influence on Hao,and serves as a foundation for his Shushu methods andChou-Ⅰ theory. The second chapter mainly discusses the origin of Hao Datong’s Shushu methods(such as forecastology and calculation methods). His Chou-Ⅰ theory originated from Wang Bi and Kong Yingda’s Orthodox Chou-I,and at the same time inherited from traditional astrology numerology.Based on the analysis of Hao Datong’s preface of Articles from Taigu,it is found that Hao has established his own system of Shushu methods and Chou-I theory via the mutual proof by I-Ching and Tao Te Ching,in which the Orthodox Chou-I and astrology numerology are compatible. The third chapter illustrates the Shushu methods(this is not the forecastology and calculation methods but the philosophy)in the A Brief Paraphrase of the Chou-I Ts ’an-t ’ung ch’i,the thirty-three I patterns and Jindan Poetry referred in Hao Datong’s Articles from Taigu.A Brief Paraphrase of the Chou-Ⅰ Ts ’an-t ’ung ch ’i is a refined version of Orthodox Chou-I,a discussion of the Qian and Kun Hexagrams, and the metaphysics foundation of Hao Datong’s nature system. The thirty-three I patterns are the essence of Hao’s ideas, which demonstrates a model of Hao’s universe via pictures, and brings about the content of Taoist internal alchemy, realizing the transition from Chou-I theory to internal alchemy.Jindan Poetry is the very embodiment of Hao Datong’s detailed internal alchemy and meditation practice, which adopts Shushu methods to explain the metaphors and to abstract the practices in obscure terms. The fourth chapter summarizes the basic features of Hao Datong’s Shushu methods.Hao’s Shushu methods establish a nature system in the way of mutual proof by I-Ching and Tao Te Ching. It also uses Shushu methods to guide daily practice and formed a unique system of Chou-I theory and Taoist internal alchemy.Hao Datong’s Shushu methods has an ever-widening influence. The in-depth research in Hao’s Shushu methods is helpful for rediscovery of traditional Chinese Shushu methods. It also boosts the understanding of traditional Chinese culture and has a very considerable reference significance for today’s society.
