| The translator focuses on the fifth chapter — Protection and Development of Tatar Culture — of the cultural work: Have Ample Virtue and Carry All Things — Protection and Development of the Cultures of Ethnic Groups with Smaller Populations. The translation of the text is of great significance to the protection of the Tatar culture. The translator applies literal translation, free translation and annotation to translate the expressions with cultural characteristics in the source text.At the same time, the translator always pays attention to the language features of the source text. There are two distinct features: there are many repetitions of information and sentences with no subjects. In response to repetitive information, the translator applies strategies based upon substitution and omission.Five translation skills help to address sentences with no subjects: adding a subject, using core words in adverbial as a subject, replacing a verb with a noun as a subject, adapting the “there be” sentence pattern and translating into passive sentences. The translator hopes that the translation practice report will contribute to cultural translation studies. |
