Baldwin is a famous American black writer.He created numerous works in his lifetime and was praised as the model of American black literature in the 1940 s and 1950 s.He devoted all his life to the preservation and promotion of black culture,and made new explorations in the theme and form of the novel,which made the African American literature enter a new development stage and made outstanding contributions to the development of African American literature after the Second World War.The essence of Baldwin’s novels is to explore the racial contradictions in America,and in the process of exploring this essence,the "Repression" psychology repeatedly presented is the most important expression means in his novels.Therefore,this paper focuses on the study of the "Repression" psychology in Baldwin’s novels.Thus we can know more about Baldwin’s works and his repressed inner world.This paper is divided into three parts.The first part analyzes the forming reasons of Baldwin’s "Repression" from three aspects: society,family and religion.The second part explores the psychological expression and release of "repression" in Baldwin’s novels through the method of close reading.The third part analyzes the social and cultural impact of Baldwin’s novels on the psychology of "repression".The author will combine relevant psychological theories such as Freud’s psychoanalytic theory with the method of close reading to analyze Baldwin’s novel world,so as to explore the real reason and meaning behind his "Repression" psychology,and further enrich the academic research of Baldwin’s novels.
