Cultural Meanings In English Vocabulary And Cross-cultural Communication Strategies

Nowadays,with the intensification of globalization,successful cross-cultural communication is of great importance not only to individuals who participate in cross-cultural communication,but also to a social group,a nation and even a country.Given the status and breadth of English in today's world,cross-cultural communication between English culture and other cultures has attracted more and more attention.However,the English culture to be studied in this paper is not the English culture of all English-speaking countries,but the culture of the traditional English bases,namely “the inner circle of English culture”.The main contents of this paper are as follows:(1)taking the cultural keywords of the inner circle of English culture as the research object;(2)taking the Natural Semantic Metalanguage theory and the research method of Cultural Scripts proposed by Anna Wierzbicka,the founder of Polish Semantic School,as the basic theory and research tool respectively;(3)to analyze the cultural implications of “true” “false” in logistics,“beauty” “ugliness” in aesthetics,“good” “evil” in ethics,and the cultural keywords closely related to them;(4)to reveal the hidden values,thinking habits,aesthetic pursuance,cultural norms,communicative norms and so on,through analysis,and to construct cross-cultural communication strategies which is feasible and effective.Based on the analysis of cultural implications in Chapter Three,the author has constructed five cross-cultural communication strategies: choosing words carefully,with no exaggeration;distinguishing between “thinking” and “knowing”;avoiding conflicts and maintaining harmony;keeping rational and limiting emotional expression;protecting personal autonomy.
