As one of the great realistic writers in the 19th century,George Eliot's novels are famous for its depth and intelligence, and her second novel The Mill on the Floss has always been regarded as a moralistic novel. However, the vast representations of geographical space at the beginning of the novel and all aspects of Victorian life mapped into a micro social space are worth exploring further.Based on the spatial theory, the narrowness and limitation of female individual's life in geographic space and the submissiveness and repressions of female individual's life in social space were analyzed in this thesis. And then, this thesis points out that the reconstruction of women's survival space mainly depends on the expansion of public space, the expansion of gender space and the awaking of female self-consciousness.In this way, this thesis has not only broadened the research perspective of George Eliot's novels but also has deepened the understanding of the theme of The Mill on the Floss and the women's living state in the period of social transformation. In the Victorian era,the spatial life of female individuals was faced with multiple difficulties.Only by constantly expanding female space and constructing their own survival space can they obtain the same development opportunities and discourse power as men. What's more, the study of female space in The Mill on the Floss may offer some insight into the construction of the harmonious relationship between women and men in contemporary society.
